What is the difference in medical massage and Swedish massage?

In a medical massage, specific areas are targeted (low back pain – hip flexors, shoulder pain – pectoralis). This type of massage can sometimes be uncomfortable as the goal is to relax the muscles and sometimes the therapist will use deep pressure to achieve the results. The discomfort usually dissipates after the massage. Several modalities may comprise a medical massage: Thai, sports, trigger point, and massage cupping. Any of these may be used dependent on the desired outcome.

In a Swedish massage, the entire body (neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, and back) is massaged. Draping is strictly enforced so only the body part being worked on will be uncovered. The pressure used depends on what the client wants. Pressure can vary from very light to very deep. Dialog with your therapist will ensure that your needs are met. In general, this is a relaxing type of massage focusing on total body relaxation.
