/ Patient Testimonials

Saw Dr. Ted Peters again, which in itself is always a delight. This time we have to do surgery! Sigh, but I said yes immediately and scheduled it because I have total confidence in Dr. Ted Peters and his abilities. He has done some fantastic things with the situations with which I have gotten my hands and wrists!

Angela B.

Dr. Fleager took over my care after I had surgery in Germany. She was professional, polite, helpful, reassuring, and did a great job in operating on me and caring for me before and after surgery. I am an RN with 45 years of experience and know a great doctor when I see one. She is great! My finger has much better functionality than I ever hoped for, and that is due to Dr. Fleager.

Nancy T.

Dr. Peters was always so kind. He took all the time necessary to explain my health issues and gave me all the alternative ways to help me. After surgery became my last option, he explained the procedure in detail.

Peggy C.

One of my favorite things about Dr. Fleager is how she explained the procedure and what to expect in terms I could understand. She took her time and never made me feel like she was rushing. The same goes for her staff. They were outstanding. She was always on time for my appointments or early and I appreciated that! I would recommend her to anyone needing hand surgery. Thank you!

Kelliye W.

I had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands and triggered finger on my right thumb. Everything went beautifully. Dr. Peters did an excellent job.

Your surgeon is specifically trained to perform bone, joint, and muscle surgery. Board certification verifies that your surgeon is committed to continuing education and maintaining current surgical standards and knowledge and is held to the highest standards of performance in orthopedic surgery.

Training in orthopedic surgery is completed over many years, including medical school and residency. Fellowship training is an additional year of specialized training after the completion of a residency.

Certification and/or fellowship training sets the surgeon apart from others in the field of orthopedic surgery in terms of overall expertise.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms or difficulties outlined below, it may indicate a serious problem that requires immediate attention and care. These signs include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or throbbing in the hand, wrist, or forearm
  • Intense, recurring pain in the hand or wrist when relaxed or when performing a task, such as gripping an item
  • Excessive swelling or discomfort that does not resolve after a few days
  • Inability to bend your fingers or your wrist
  • Inability to straighten your wrist or your fingers
  • Difficulty carrying, opening, or twisting objects

The decision to consider surgery should always come if you continue to experience persistent and disabling hand or wrist pain after you have used all available nonsurgical options. If you have a severe injury, deformity, or condition, surgery may be your only viable option, but you and your surgeon will need to make the decision together.

Your surgeon will perform a comprehensive evaluation and may order imaging studies to help diagnose your issue. You will then sit down with your surgeon to discuss your treatment options, including a description of the treatment protocol or procedure, the risks and benefits, and your recovery period. During this time, you will want to ask questions and you will be encouraged to do your own research to make the care decision that is right for you.

In many cases, yes. Our ultimate goal at our Hand & Wrist Center is to help you heal, feel better, and keep doing what you love, and surgery is always our final consideration for your treatment plan. Our exceptional surgeons will first guide you through treatment options that do not include surgery before considering additional methods.

A number of injuries and conditions affecting your hand or wrist can be alleviated or healed through conservative measures. These include:

  • Activity modification
  • Immobilization (having a cast, splint, or sling)
  • Injections
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Rest

Whether you already have a hand or wrist injury or condition or want to prevent one, these guidelines should help:

  • If your hand or wrist is hurting, avoid participating in activities that require you to use that hand or wrist. Try using your other arm or keeping the affected arm immobilized until the pain subsides or until you recover.
  • Varying your tasks can help prevent either incurring or aggravating injuries, such as strains, as well as chronic conditions, such as tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Work on balance and strength and be wary of your surroundings, keeping your path as clear as possible, to help avoid falls where you may land on your hand or arm.
  • Whether you’re playing sports, working, or using tools, practice proper form. For example, when using a computer, have the keyboard and mouse adjusted for your physique.
  • Take breaks when actively using your hands and wrists for a given task and, if possible, switch arms as needed.
