Intracept®

A Solution for Lasting Relief

As a minimally invasive procedure, Intracept is designed to provide long-term relief for those suffering from chronic low-back pain (CLBP).

How It Works

Identification
Previously, the source of chronic lower back pain was identified as a problem with the discs located between the spinal vertebrae. Through modern research, orthopedic doctors have found that pain can occur from damaged vertebral endplates, the bones located on either side of the vertebrae.

Evaluation
Using an MRI, Intracept expert Dr. Melissa Murphy visually identifies endplate damage by seeing any presence of Modic changes—signs of chronic disc inflammation or degeneration. Modic changes cause chronic pain through the basivertebral nerve (BVN). This nerve runs through the vertebrae and transmits the pain signals.

Treatment
Dr. Murphy treats the BVN to reduce pain from the endplates and degeneration. Through a small incision in the lower back, a special probe is inserted and guided toward the BVN. The probe releases radiofrequency energy, or heat, to stop the nerve from communicating the pain signals.

Recovery
Shortly after the procedure, many patients will begin to experience relief and be able to resume some normal daily activities. Oftentimes, Dr. Murphy will schedule sessions with our specialty-trained physical therapists to ensure proper healing and recovery.
